The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today approved a generic formulation of sildenafil, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil is the active ingredient in the drug Viagra.
This is the first approval of sildenafil as a treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and other conditions, including chronic heart failure, in men. Sildenafil is available as an oral tablet or suspension.
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is the condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs, usually in the leg, is too high. PAH is characterized by sudden high blood pressure in the lungs. PAH is a type of high blood pressure that occurs in the lungs when the blood vessels in the lungs don’t pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. The heart, on the other hand, is usually in the chest and lungs. PAH is caused by narrowing of blood vessels in the lungs. PAH is often called angina.
Sildenafil has been approved to treat PAH for nearly 20 years.
Sildenafil has been approved for use in men with erectile dysfunction. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

McCormack, a senior vice president and general counsel at Pfizer. “The FDA is the first authority to approve a new drug to treat erectile dysfunction. This is the first time that this drug has been approved by the FDA.”
Pfizer has received final approval from the FDA to manufacture the new drug. The drug is expected to be available in generic form by the end of 2025. This is the first time that generic sildenafil has been approved.
According to the FDA, the generic form of sildenafil is currently not available. The generic version of sildenafil is available as an oral tablet or suspension, for oral administration, by prescription. Sildenafil is also being investigated for its potential side effects.
“Today’s approval shows our commitment to bringing affordability to patients by offering this affordable treatment option,” said Paul W. Wechols, MD, director of the FDA’s Office of Generic Drugs and the lead clinical investigator on the drug. “Today’s approval underscores the continued efforts of Pfizer to bring affordable medication to consumers.”
Dr. Wichols has been an investigator for the FDA since 1997, and he has spent five years on the FDA clinical trials unit. In 1999, he and Dr. Wichols conducted one-on-one clinical trials with Dr. Robert H. Wechols, MD, to determine the safety and efficacy of sildenafil for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Wechols reviewed the clinical trials and determined that sildenafil was effective in men with erectile dysfunction. After receiving FDA approval, Dr. Wechols completed a study with Dr. Wechols, MD, to determine the safety and efficacy of sildenafil in men with pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Wichols and Dr. H. T. Trombetta, the other company responsible for approval, submitted to the FDA for approval of sildenafil as a generic formulation of the drug. The generic form of sildenafil, known as vardenafil, was approved by the FDA on April 29, 2001. The brand-name drug sildenafil was approved by the FDA on July 18, 2000. The generic form of sildenafil is currently available at no cost, or as an oral tablet.
